Sports Series Bike Phone Mount

ROKFORM approached me to create an animation showing off their new Sports Series Bike Mount. I was excited to try some new workflows in order to achieve these results.

Making the Real, Digital

Since this product wasn’t yet in production, I only had access to their CAD files and pictures of prototype parts. I set out to capture their product CMF (color, materials, and finish); creating custom materials and textures to match the design intent.

Bringing motion to CAD

ROKFORM wanted to show the Hook & Loop (Velcro) strap in motion, which isn’t possible using traditional CAD techniques.

I rebuilt portions of their SolidWorks model in Blender, adding in the ability to fully animate the geometry while keeping the original model detail and material definitions in place.

The armature system allowed me to control the strap, including hook & loop geometry, and dynamically position it as needed. This is a great example of combining different 3D tools to achieve the best result.

Camera angles and part movements were planned in advance, giving us key frames that drove the animation pacing.

The bike, sourced from Turbosquid, added the context necessary to show the mount in its intended use case.

Small, medium, and large, please.

Since the strap came in three sizes, creating variations of animated geometry was simple.
